JACKAL STONE 10 – special forces exercise
In September special forces multinational exercise JACKAL STONE10 will be executed in Poland and Lithuania. SOCEUR (Special Operations Command Europe) is the organizer of the exercise.
The host nations are Poland and Lithuania. For the first time special forces subunits from USA, Ukraine, Croatia, Rumania, Latvia, Poland and Lithuania will participate in the common exercise on the territories of those two host nation countries.
Special forces soldiers representing 7 countries will exercise on military premises in Poland and Lithuania.
The primary purpose of the exercise is to promote cooperation and enhance interoperability amongst the participating special operations forces. The goal is to train together to build mutual respect while sharing doctrinal concepts, training concepts and various tactics, techniques and procedures. The exercise is also an opportunity to improve readiness and build capacity in order to build special operations excellence together.
Of essential importance for the exercise in the field of planning and conducting special operations will be the employment of CJSOTF (Combined Joint Special Operation Task Force) and the representatives of POLSOCOM will be the part of it.
JACKAL STONE exercise is also the next stage of preparing Poland to take position of the frame nation in the field of NATO special operations in 2014.
The condition to obtain such position is reaching the readiness to establish command post of the special forces component in the allied operation (CJSOCC – Combined Joint Special Operation Component Command) capable of commanding multinational special forces. At present USA, the Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy and France comply with the conditions to be “Frame Nation” in the field of special operations.
Jackal Stone 10, a multinational special operations forces (SOF) military exercise, concluded in Poland and Lithuania on Sept. 27 marking the third consecutive year of the capstone training event for U.S. Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR).
More than 1,100 SOF members from Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Ukraine and the United States participated in the exercise held Sept. 13 – 27 aimed at enhancing the capabilities and interoperability amongst the participating forces.
SOCEUR personnel provided key logistic, operational, medical, personnel, aviation, and public affairs staff support to the host nations and four other countries participating in the exercise.
At the tactical level, SOF units conducted high action fast rope insertion/exertion system training; naval visit, board, search and seizure training; helicopter aerial refueling; and both water drop and freefall parachute training to improve their skills.
But perhaps even more importantly, SOF operators perfected some of their lower profile skills too. For example, they worked to uncover clues from walk-in informants and conduct key leader engagements (also known as K.L.E.s) with role-players replicating local officials, as most of the intelligence information in the exercise was only available through contact with role-players who represented the local population.
Perfecting these myriad skills allowed them to better conduct more complex surgical direct action and special reconnaissance missions, gain situational awareness of the enemy and thus determine the humanitarian needs of the populace to support the overall counterinsurgency operation.
To communicate exercise objectives, both Poland and Lithuania invited distinguished members of their nation’s leadership as well as prominent media members to witness the training and meet participants.
