Marine Exercise 10 – East Timor                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                A major multi-lateral exercise climaxed in East Timor yesterday (25 June 10) when a multinational force raided Manatuto Prison.

US Marines, Australian and New Zealand soldiers of the International Stabilisation Force (ISF) and the East Timor Defence Force (F-FDTL) concentrated on the prison in the country’s east for two raids that tested interoperability and operational planning.

The prison raids culminated with an assault by F-FDTL, ISF and US Marines, including air support from the USS Peleliu and the Timor Leste Aviation Group (TLAG).

More than 100 F-FDTL soldiers participated in the MARINE EXERCISE 10 (MAREX 10), also called EXERCISE CROCODILE.

The Exercise focused on professional development and arms corps advice to the F-FDTL. It also included community support activities such as engineering, medical and community relations programs.

The participating Marines landed from USS Peleliu and comprised the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (15 MEU). 30th June 2010

26th MEU Raid Force Hones Maritime Interception Skills                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                BARNWELL, S.C. – Marines prepare to fast-rope onto a building as their hovering Navy MH-60S Seahawk Helicopter begins to inch closer to the rooftop.

The Marines launch their ropes and swiftly slide down onto the roof, which serves as the simulated deck of a ship. As soon as the team is on the deck, they quickly assemble and breach the building entrances where their enemy waits to resist.

Their objective: to take control of the simulated ship and capture or eliminate enemy threats within it.

This was the goal during a three-day Maritime Interception Operations exercise held at a training facility in Barnwell, S.C., June 22-24.

The exercise provided integrated and sustainment training in the areas of breaching, fast-roping, tight-quarters maneuvering, and ship control for the raid force. Marines with 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit worked in cooperation with Helicopter Sea Combat 22 sailors based out of Norfolk, Va., as well as civilian law enforcement and military training instructors. The training utilized buildings renovated to simulate naval vessels. Marine scout snipers also trained in aerial assault by shooting targets on a nearby range from UH-N1 Huey and Navy MH-60S Seahawk Helicopters.

Despite the fact that the training took place inside a building and not a ship, the tight spaces and low-light environment provided a realistic feel for the Marines, said Lance Cpl. Stephen McCormick, a radio operator with Battalion Landing Team 3/8, 26th MEU.

“This building with its very enclosed spaces provided for good ship training since ships have narrow passageways,” McCormick said. Ship passageways and spaces are extremely narrow and become more difficult for Marines to maneuver through when they are wearing combat gear. This training helped prepare the Marines to overcome these kinds of challenges.

Inside the building the Marines encountered role-players offering varying degrees of compliance, including simulated gunfire from hostile personnel. The force also had to compete with language barriers, had to check for identification of people inside, and negotiate the challenges that come with simulated improvised explosive devices, said Chad Harbaugh, president of Government Training Institute, the company facilitating the training during the exercise.

“This building offered us a ton of flexibility,” Harbaugh said. “Training inside the building is analogous to training in the belly of the ship.”

The exercise is an important part of preparing 26th MEU Marines for their upcoming deployment as the MEU has dealt with similar situations in the past. In January 2009, 26th MEU provided support to Combined Task Force 151, an international naval task force set up in response to piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia.

“What these abilities provide the MEU commander is the ability to train with multinational Maritime Interception Operation teams and conduct real-world missions on different platforms as piracy has become more prevalent in the past few years,” said Lt. j.g. Carrie L. Muller, lead planner for the training event.

The Maritime Interception Operations exercise was one of the last land-based training evolutions for the MEU prior to its deployment. Next for 26th MEU is Composite Training Unit Exercise, during which MEU Marines will project power ashore from Naval vessels. After that, the Marines' Certification Exercise will be the last training event for the Camp Lejeune-based 26th MEU before deployment.

Elementary, My Dear Marine: Operation New Dawn Patrols Lead to Cache Finds                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                SOUTHERN SHORSURAK, Afghanistan — It became the catchphrase of the day — “I might as well be God d---ed Sherlock Holmes.”

A bit vulgar with a touch of arrogance, but the Marine saying it had a right to be cocky. Sgt. James R. Humerick had tracked down an improvised explosive device cache as if he’d had a premonition. The squad leader from Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, didn’t just call the compound it was in, he narrowed it down to the room.

Shortly after departing the company’s newly established observation post in Southern Shorsurak for a patrol as part of Operation New Dawn, June 20, Humerick led his squad east toward empty compounds. No more than a minute after telling his Marine to sweep a room, the handheld metal detector emitted a high-pitched whine. A little digging revealed an IED cache: two directional fragmentation IEDs weighing 35 pounds each, 15 feet of detonation cord and 15 pounds of ammonium nitrate and aluminium powder.

Triggered by the rush of the find, the Sherlock Holmes line was born. It would be repeated through the day, often as a joke, sometimes variations would take form, “Sgt. James Humerick, AKA Sherlock Holmes the most.”

The patrol that day was a success, and other patrols by other squads during the first week of the operation would also yield cache finds.

For Humerick, from Great Falls, Mont., the find was a welcome change of pace. He is on his fourth deployment and in previous experiences, “We didn’t really find the IEDS, they kind of found us.”

Even though Humerick seemed to be a natural detective that day, he’d later admit the find was part luck, part experience. The discovery came on just the fourth day of Operation New Dawn, a joint operation between Marine Corps units and the Afghanistan National Army to disrupt enemy forces which have been using the sparsely populated region between Marjah and Nawa as a safe haven.

The Marines had limited their patrols to the north and south of their position for the first few days of the operation. Humerick’s patrol was among the first to head east.

“I decided to go straight east and see what was out there,” Humerick said. “We came upon that compound and it just looked like somewhere where I’d hide something. It was run down, nobody lived there. That’s what I try to think like, ‘What would I do? Where would I put it?’ If you do that, usually you’re pretty accurate.”

According to Master Sgt. Jeffrey A. Bratcher, an explosive ordnance disposal staff non-commissioned officer in charge from Marine Wing Support Squadron 274, the IEDs were similar to what has been found in the Helmand province and are primarily used to hit Marines on dismounted patrols.

The Marines were able to see what the IEDs are capable of when Bratcher and his fellow EOD technician destroyed the cache during a controlled detonation just hours after it was found.

As the blast sent shockwaves through the earth, and smoke and sand high into the sky, Humerick had the same thought he’d had in the back of his mind since finding the cache.

“Everyone wants to find a fight, but bringing everybody back is the most important,” Humerick said. “Finding those IEDs, you’re saving lives. Well, somebody else might find them, but when you find them you’re pretty much keeping someone in the fight.”
