SAS的正式组建，是在第二次世界大战中的1942年，SAS的构成中有21、22、23、三个团。但是，其中的第22特别空勤团一般被认为是真正意义上的SAS。其他团虽冠以SAS的名称，但与第22团的实质内容上略有不同
