</p><p>The illustration shows a private from the 1st Battalion, in Marching Order-South Africa, May 1900. The painting is by Douglas N. Anderson.<br/>The soldier is wearing the later issue khaki serge uniform which was far better wearing than the lighter khaki drill uniform seen earlier in the war. His foreign service helmet has been replaced with a slouch hat.<br/>He is armed with the Lee Enfield Mk1 which replaced the Lee Metford after it was found the newly developed cordite powder corroded the Metford rifling. He wears the 1888 pattern waistbelt and braces and the 1897 ammunition bandolier which replaced the belt-worn pouches. His haversack is the 1883 General Service model and he wears the 1895 iron waterbottle on his right hip. His mess tin sits on top of his rolled greatcoat, strapped to the rear of his waist belt.<br/><br/></p>

<p><strong>Mounted Infantry, Boer War, South Africa, 1901</strong>
        </p><p>Lance Corporal, 2nd Northamptonshire Regiment, 3rd Battalion Mounted Infantry 1901.<br/>The 3rd Regular Mounted Infantry was originally formed from 1st Division units. This figure's battalion provided its No.4 Company.<br/>His helmet has a less conspicuous regimental flash than the 1899 type though some of his company were in slouch hats by this date. He is still is khaki drill with cavalry pantaloons, although the new khaki serge frock was more common at this time. He is still in 1888 belt and braces but wears the 50 round ammo belt. His Lee Enfield has a short arm sling as well as the longer version, for use when mounted to steady the rifle in its bucket. He carries the 1893 General Service haversack and covered iron water bottle.<br/></p><p>&nbsp;</p>
