Found and raised by Podlings after her mother hid her from the Garthim, Kira believes herself to be the last of her kind.

War and terror have ravaged the lands of Thra. Where once many Gelfling thrived; grim ruins, long reclaimed by vines and weeds, stand quiet and deathly still. The Gelfling are gone, wiped out by the Skeksis and their murderous warrior-slaves, the Garthim. Yet even as a voiceless wind blows leaves through lifeless stone streets and empty halls, a secret hope is nurtured…

A child of the forest, Kira spends her days exploring with her pet Fizzgig, listening to the songs of the woodland, and learning about its denizens. Having the gift of communion with her wild animal friends, Kira can divine meaning in the intricacies of their calls and reproduce them to speak with even the humblest of creatures. On silvery wings she flits through the forest and with bare feet she treads quietly its secret paths, alert to the sounds and moods of her surroundings. Yet on this day, as the Three Suns edge closer together in the sky, Kira’s exploring brings her face to face with a being she has never seen before, and yet, more familiar than any she has known. Could it be?

In a shrouded valley, lost to time, a Gelfling boy is nurtured and taught by the wise Mystics.

With kindness and patience, the ten gnarled sages share with Jen the shapes and names of the world of Thra. With gentle, protective arms they keep him here, secret and safe from the horrors outside. For beyond the confines of this hidden sanctuary the Three Suns burn above a world out of balance, where Gelfling are no more. The last of his kind, Jen bears the burden of a dark and terrible time before he was born, but while he knows of the cruel Skeksis who murdered his parents from his master’s stories, only as the Great Conjunction approaches does he learn the full truth of the tale and the part he must yet play in its telling.

Change comes, and with the passing of urSu, the Master, Jen must forsake his home, farewelling his surrogate family to venture forth into strange lands. Journeying beyond the walls of the vale he seeks a creature by the name of Aughra, from whom he gains a strange gift: a glittering shard of pure crystal.

Before he can learn what to do with this artifact, crab-like Garthim, soldiers of the Skeksis, attack Aughra’s home, leaving Jen alone in the world that hunts him. Afraid and uneasy as the Three Suns climb toward each other in the sky, Jen is left with more questions, a growing sense of dread, and a purpose yet to be understood or fulfilled.

Tools of war, devoid of thought or conscience; a soulless army animated by arcane means, devoted and forever chained to the will of their masters; the Garthim were appalling corruptions engineered by the Skeksis to carry out their brutal crusade against the Gelfling.

“Garthim! Death to Gelfling!” – skekUng

Hulking, crab-like foot soldiers, the Garthim served their masters without question. Dispatched from the Castle of the Crystal to enforce the Skeksis’ campaign of brutality and genocide, the Garthim roved across Thra spreading terror wherever they went. Within the shadowed passages and halls of the darkened castle they stood silent and unmoving; sentinels on ceaseless watch, or cloistered in lightless pits, awaiting the orders of their draconic overlords.

With a mess of black legs, a polished jet-like carapace, and giant destructive claws, the Garthim were believed to be invincible. Mightier than any of Thra’s creatures, they smashed their way through almost any barrier, be it Podling homes or the walls of Aughra’s observatory. Few, if any beings, were their equal, save for the swift-limbed Landstriders, whose long legs could pierce Garthim shells and whose courage could overcome the terror of their piercing purple eyes.
