Going Home on Leave - Coldstream Guard, Middlesbrough, 1941
I haven't had much time to do any 1/6th stuff recently, so I thought I'd re-run one of my favourite figures here.
This mini dio was inspired by some shots in Brayley & Ingram's excellent refence "The World War II Tommy" (P. 42)
A Coldstream Guard has been lucky enough to get a week's leave prior to 'changing station', i.e. moving to a new posting, so he carries all his belongings with him. This load-out was known as "Field Service Marching Order".
He just has enough time to travel back to his home town of Middlesbrough, one of the traditional recruiting areas for the CG.
Walking down his street he comes across his son, a polio survivor who will always have to wear callipers to allow him to walk. The happiness of father and son at their reunion is easy to understand.
As a Guardsman, his kit is obviously perfect* - indeed, he was inspected before leaving the barracks, and if it wasn't his leave pass would have been cancelled. Webbing has been Blanco'd and, despite regulation forbidding it, his 'best' boots have been bulled and polished.
Happy to be going home, even briefly
