Advance to contact, Papua November 1942
G'day all,
Has been awhile however, last weekend, I was able to put in two of the big three dioramas that I had planned for the annual model show here in Canberra (in the land 'down under' - Australia). First cab off the rank is a quick change to a scene that I had planned but could not finish in time that was initially titled 'Bunker Assault' but ended up being renamed, at the last minute, 'Advance to Gona' (leading to the beach head battles of Papua in Nov '42). I got halfway through constructing a Japanese log pillbox for the assault scene but unfortunately did not get the time to complete it...in time. So I went for a Plan B which is what can be viewed in the pics attached and is basically an Australian infantry section of the 2/31st Battalion (25th Brigade, 7th Australian Imperial Force Division) making contact along one of the few walking tracks leading to the Japanese lodgement areas on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea with a Japanese light machine gun who, along with other small units, were sent out to slow the Allied advance towards the beaches.
This year marks not only the end of WW1 Centenary (which I paid homage to on Day 2 of the show with the addition of a poppy and 3rd Pattern Australian Army General Service Badge (more commonly known as the 'Rising Sun' badge) which was the type worn by the 'Diggers' in both world wars (and is therefore the most prevalent of the 7 design patterns to the badge so far produced)...but also because 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Papua Campaign (which contains the fight for the Kokoda Track, the battles of Milne Bay and the beach head battles of Gona, Sanananda and Buna) so I was more than keen to have the Australians represented given I could not do it last year due to a quick notice 'holiday'.
The other diorama covers the wherewithal of the 'Achtung Jabo' projects but more on that later...for now, enjoy. Steve
