Fiery Retrubution... Barrikady Gun Factory Dec. 21, 1942
While reading Jason Mark's Island of Fire a few years ago I became quite intrigued with his commentary regarding the Russian ampulomet teams. The ampulomet, otherwise known as a Molotov projector, was a muzzle loaded smooth bore weapon that propelled glass spheres filled with an incendiary phosphorous/ thermite mixture up to ranges of 250 meters. Operated by a crew of 3,the ampulomet had a rate of fire of 8 rounds/ min. and was used to arc its projectile behind walls and into trenches. while inaccurate, cumbersome, and unsuccessful vs. tanks, it proved very effective against soft targets and bunkers. The German soldiers became quickly alarmed by its accomplishments against strongpoints and of the horrific wounds it inflicted.
The Soviet 650th Rifle Regiment was issued 2 of these weapons Dec. 9, 1942 , its use being quickly noted by the German troops occupying the emplacements surrounding the transformer hut and the "Kommissarhaus". Over the course of the next week ampulomet teams were in place in both the Russian 95th and 138th Rifle Divisions, battling for the Barrikady , with the awesome sight of exploding ampoules rapidly impressing the Soviet troops.
" During the fighting, good results were shown by the ampulomet platoon and thermite spheres, as a result of whose application it was possible to force the enemy from dug-outs and trenches. It was reckoned that they burned up 5 dug-outs, 4 pillboxes, and up to 40 enemy soldiers. As a result of their use, the ampulomet and thermite spheres have earned a special prestige amonst the soldiers and commanders. Using thermite spheres in a platoon of the 241st Rifle Regiment was Red Army man Noskov who distinguished himself by destroying 2 dug-outs and 4 enemy soldiers."
Enjoy!! As always comments and critisisms welcome.
