髹金漆龍紋寶座號稱“天下第一”龍椅，它氣勢非凡，首先在于它高高在上的態勢，龍椅本身就形體高大，其又高踞在三面出陛（宮殿中的台階）的高台上。
再結合太和殿外層層升起的崇高氣勢，有力地顯示出天子皇位的至尊無上！
髹金漆雲龍紋寶座，用楠木制作，通高172.5厘米，座高49厘米，座寬158.5厘米，縱79厘米，下層座長162厘米，寬99.5厘米，高21厘米。寶座通體貼金，從上到下每層都裝飾著祥龍紋。
椅圈上，盤繞著13條形象生動的金龍，椅背正中是一條正龍，後背盤金龍，中格浮雕雲紋和火珠，下格透雕卷草紋。高束腰處四面開光，透雕雙龍戲珠圖案。透孔處以藍色綢緞彩地襯托，高束腰上下刻蓮瓣紋托腮。
中間束腰飾珠花，四面牙板及拱肩均浮雕卷草和獸頭，椅面配金黃色綢緞坐墊，富麗堂皇，精美絕倫。
髹金漆雲龍紋寶座上的雕龍具有明朝雕龍的特點，曾遭受到非常嚴重的破壞，後經故宮專家的全力修複，才恢複了它的本來面貌。
這也是紫禁城裏保存下來唯一的一個明代的寶座。
據故宮專家朱家溍先生考證，這個寶座很有可能是明代嘉靖時期重建皇極殿（太和殿的前身）時的遺物。
清代康熙年間重修太和殿時，這個寶座被重新整修後又繼續使用直到清末。
寶座上具有的典型明代龍紋式樣恰好可以證明這一觀點。
不過，到了1915年袁世凱登基的時候，他專門趕制了一把具有西洋風格的九龍寶座替換了這把金龍寶座，因爲腿短，他需要一個座面很矮的寶座來讓他能夠顯示帝王的氣派，只是時間倉促，這把九龍寶座的材料和制作工藝都十分粗糙。
1947年，故宮博物院決定恢複太和殿陳列的原狀，將袁世凱的寶座撤出（現存放在清東陵），換回原先的寶座，可是這把髹金漆雲龍紋寶座卻找不著了。
直到1959年，朱家溍先生才終于在一處存放破舊家具和木料的庫房中發現了這件已經殘破不堪的金龍寶座。
爲了修複這件寶座，專家們根據皇帝畫像裏寶座的形狀，參考甯壽宮裏類似的另一件龍椅，由劉炳森先生繪制圖樣，從1963年起，故宮博物院動用各個工種13位專家，木活、雕活、銅活、漆活等花了934個工日，于1964年6月才將金龍寶座修葺一新，回歸太和殿。

太平有象：
太平有象是汉族传统吉祥纹样。《汉书·王莽传》：“天下太平，五谷成熟”。太平有象即天下太平、五谷丰登的意思。瓶与平同音。故吉祥图案常画象驮宝瓶，瓶中还插有花卉作装饰。
