Probably the most unconventional unit of the U.S. forces in Vietnam, the MACV-SOG ("Military Assistance Command Vietnam - Studies and Observation Group")was composed primarily of U.S. Army Special Forces personnel, but also contained members from the Marine Recon, Air Force Special Ops, and Navy SEALs. Their various (and usually extremely hazardous) missions included covert ops and sabotage behind enemy lines, cross-border missions into Laos and Cambodia, as well as prisoner of war intelligence and rescue.
[Gun] While many different kinds of weapons were used by MACV-SOG operatives depending on the mission, the XM177 or CAR-15 was a preferred weapon for reconnaissance personnel. A submachine gun version of the traditional M16, the CAR-15 was both lighter and shorter -- yet still carried enough firepower to finish the job. MACV-SOG was one of the most hazardous duties for U.S. personnel in Vietnam, with a casualty rate exceeding 100% -- the highest sustained casualty rate since the American Civil War. Nevertheless, through expert training and weaponry such as this, MACV-SOG also boasted the highest "kill ratio" in U.S. military history -- approximately 158-to-1 by 1970.
[Uniform] Due to the unusual nature of their missions, MACV-SOG personnel were given unprecedented latitude in their choice of uniform and equipment. In most cases, the optimum goal was simply to be invisible -- to blend in as much as possible, both with the environment and with the indiginous Vietnamese. Locally-made black jungle fatigues were an ideal solution for some MACV-SOG, affording them maximum camouflage during night operations and the general appearance of black-clad Vietnamese villagers to the casual observer during the day.
[Gear] Rather than the standard LCE, many MACV-SOG personnel opted instead to build their load harness on the STABO extraction device. Developed at the Special Forces Recondo School in 1968, the STABO was a means of quick extraction where the landing of a helicopter was not possible. Ropes were lowered from the helicopter, then attached to the D-rings on the STABO -- and the operative was effectively yanked from the jungle, suspended by the ropes to an area where the helicopter could safely land. Naturally, this was an exceedingly dangerous means of extraction -- but often preferable to the alternative of staying on the ground under enemy fire.
