Kleinfunksprecher d (KlFuSpr.d) "Dorette"
The Dorette came in to service in October 1944. The set is the smallest set the Germans fielded. It was designed to be used by Artillery forward observers. It covers 33.8 to 38.0 Mhz. The set, as issued, came in a small suitcase which held the radio, the battery box, a spare battery and accessories needed to operate the set. The radio had two major components, the radio and the battery box.
Other accessories were the throat mike, the headset and the antenna(s) The set uses three tubes, an RL 1P 2, asecond RL1P2 and a DDD 25 which is two tubes in one envelope. Labelled on the schematic as Ro 1,Ro 2, Ro 3 and Ro 4. The front panel has the sockets for plugging in the throat mike, the headset and the battery cable. Front panel controls consist of one switch, Off, Receive or transmit and the main tuning control.
Rotating this control results in a large dial inside being rotated. On the set, there is a window where the frequency can be seen. The set can be used as a base station with log wire antenna and counterpoise wire or on the move. When on the move, the radio is worn on the belt in front and the battery box is worn in the rear.
These sets were "neat souvenirs" and easy to send home, hence many of them have survived and they can still be found for $150-$ 300 in price. Not so fortunate were the battery boxes. They are very rare items. So rare in fact that there is a person in Europe who has been making reproduction battery boxes. They are very close to the original but the one I saw was missing the power cable and plug.
This is probably because the connector is of the famous "Brechkupplung" type, which has similar advantage as the connector in front of the E 10 K... or L... . This battery connector device, as well as the battery box, are extremely rare. The connector is made and constructed in such a manner that if a mechanical force under < 90 > degrees is [placed on it, it very easily disconnects. So what ever the reason is if you pull the wire, not just rectangularly to the front panel, it disconnects very easily. The Dorette served as the inspiration for several post war Russian Radios and the Czech RF 11 set is an almost direct copy.
